I'm looking forward to August 24th, 1995, with mixed emotions.
Half
of me hopes that, in a great bit of humble-pie eating, MicroSoft
will push back the release date of Winever yet again. The realistic
side, however, can't help feel nervous about the implications of
the impending release. As we all know, Windows 95 is a mix of 16
and 32 bit code, with a
dressed up and very Warp-like interface, that will "change the
way of computing", and change it to MicroSoft's Way, the Only Way,
of computing. It may sweep the world, as did 3.1, and because
it is an "integrated product" (DOS 7 and Win 3.1 with some new
API's and a new interface), it is not subject to the Sporkin decision.
Without too much detail, that means they may be allowed to sell
Win '95 on a per-CPU load basis, instead of asking the customer
if they want Win '95. Every computer sold will be sold with it.
I don't want to sound like a conspiracy theorist. I do want to
sound
like a realist. IBM has to get OS/2 apps on the market NOW. They've known
this for over 3 years, if not more, and if they don't do it now,
OS/2 will not be around to support. Sure, they bought Lotus, and
I hear from good sources that the new Warp SmartSuite that is built
on the same code base as the Win '95 Suite is in boxes at the loading
docks. (It will be released when the Win '95 product is, so that
they don't give their competitors a head start). That won't help
when IBM will essentially be competing against themselves. They've
bought the rights to two German programs, Star Writer and Star
Math, and will likely release an OS/2 Suite of their own. What IBM
has to do is have the major players outside Lotus commit to
developing for OS/2, and pronto. The products are needed " on store
shelves " inside of twelve months. With Corel flip-flopping on
what they want to do, that means Novell - who have a good track record
with OS/2. Oh, except for that WordPerfect thing. Which leaves
us where? Another integrated product from MS - Office.
There is no way this is coming to OS/2, as we all know, and it
has captured an unbelievable amount of the Suite market. The next
few months will be interesting...
On the lighter side...
For those who ARE into conspiracy theories, take a trip down to
Niagara Falls, Ont., and go through the JFK Assassination Wax
Museum. Yes, I'm not joking. There is such an animal, and though
I haven't been in, it's probably worth the look for the laughs
you will get. And BTW - the net is getting all-pervasive. I'm not
sure how good or
bad that is, but I had a laugh about it this weekend. Watch the
trailer for Mortal Kombat, due out at the end of this month - it
lists a web site to access more info right at the end.

Presently, membership in TO/2 requires only that you show up at
the
monthly meetings. Normally, we have a crowd of roughly 70 people
attend, but this swells and dips on a regular basis. Please
ensure that, should you attend to the meeting, you sign the
Sign-In sheets, so that we can properly account for you as a member.
Presently there is no membership fee for TO/2, and the
Executive is
currently debating this. Until such time as a decision has been
made, all TO/2 meetings and events are free of charge. For more
information about Membership, please contact

[*]Meeting Schedules
All TO/2 meetings take place on the second Thursday in the month,
in the
Auditorium of 3600 Steeles Avenue East, Markham. Meetings begin
with a one hour question and answer period at 6:30, and then presentations start
at 7:30. The August Meeting will take place on Thursday August
10,
1995. The September meeting will take place on Thursday September
14, 1995.

The programmer's Sig, headed by Norvall Oswald of the TO/2 Executive,
will have it's first meeting in September. The meeting will take
place in the Auditorium at 3600 Steeles, where the meetings take
place, on Wednesday September 13, 1995. For any further information,
please contact[*]Norvall directly. The executive committee will
be meeting shortly to further discuss
the direction of the group. The majority of the meeting will probably be
spent discussing and arranging the Charter. More information will come
when available. Finally, a little something for the programmers
out there, as

OS/2 Presentation Manager programing in combination with C/C++ and VM.

OS/2 Magazine announces Editors' Choice Award winners
July 26, 1995
At the OS/2 World Conference in Boston, Mass, OS/2 Magazine announced
that 11 products have been awarded its 1995 Editors' Choice
Award. These products are chosen by the monthly magazine's
editors, with consultation by contributing editors, regular
authors, and product reviewers.
While evaluating products for the second annual Editors' Choice
Awards, OS/2 Magazine's editors looked for products that "make a
difference" to the OS/2 community, and are widely used and
recommend by OS/2 users to their peers. "These are software and
services that are sworn by, not sworn at," said Alan Zeichick,
Editor-in-Chief of OS/2 Magazine. "These products represent the
best of what's available today, and in many cases highlight the
benefits of using OS/2 Warp 3.0, IBM's powerful 32-bit operating
system."
The 1995 OS/2 Magazine Editors' Choice Awards were presented at
the OS/2 World Conference and Exhibition, held July 17-21 in
Boston, and will be announced in the October 1995 issue of OS/2
Magazine.
In alphabetical order by company, the products are:
* Barebones Software's File Manager/2 2.32, a set of file
management and disk utilities which work closely with OS/2 Warp's
Workplace Shell user interface.
* Clear & Simple's Performance Plus 3.0, a set of tools that
not only automatically fine-tune OS/2's performance, but also
teaches about OS/2's internal operation.
* DeScribe, Inc.'s Voyager CD, a competitively priced,
full-featured word processor that's available across most PC
platforms, as well as OS/2.
* Jon Seymour's Warp Pharmacy, a World Wide Web home page and
electronic resources that offer excellent support to OS/2 Warp
users and consultants.
* Markus Schmidt's Zap-O-Comm 2.052, a popular shareware
telecommunications package that includes scripting, REXX
interface, and plug-in modules.
* NovaStar Software's Impos/2 1.2, an image-processing and
manipulation tool that support many popular file formats and
input devices.
* PowerQuest Corp.'s PartitionMagic 1.0, an easy way to grow,
shrink, and move HPFS or FAT partitions without using FDISK,
destroying data, or reformatting.
* SouthSide Software's PMMAIL 1.1, an Internet e-mail solution
with nearly all the functionality of UltiMail Lite, but with an
intuitive interface and better performance.
* SPG Inc.'s ColorWorks 1.0, a professional-level photograph
and image manipulation package that offers unprecedented ability
to create and change special effects.
* StarDock Systems's Galactic Civilizations 1.05, a
full-featured strategy and role-playing game take exploits OS/2's
multimedia capabilities.
Plus, there is one special award:
* IBM Corp.'s Internet Access Kit (OS/2 Warp), recognizing the
value of including a full suite of dial-up Internet connectivity
tools. The IAK makes access to the Internet and World Wide Web
easy for all OS/2 Warp users.
OS/2 Magazine is published by Miller Freeman Inc. Miller Freeman,
headquartered in San Francisco, is a wholly owned subsidiary of
United News and Media plc. Miller Freeman publishes more than 50
trade magazines, including OS/2 Magazine, OS/2 Developer, Dr.
Dobb's Journal, Cadence, UNIX Review, Software Development, and

PM PostNotes is primarily a PostIt type utility, allowing you to
create notes and to post them electronically on your monitor.
But, PM PostNotes is much more than simply a note poster.
It is also
o a digital clock / calendar that will optionally play a
user-defined chime on the hour, quarter, and half hours
and can also toll the hour if desired
o a stop-watch
o a reminder utility
o and a program launcher

Arawak Shareware CD
As a matter of convenience, shareware CDs can be invaluable but only
seem to hold this value for a short period of time. After several
months
they become dated and are no longer a reliable source of the latest
versions of programs, drivers, and information files.
One of the problems with Arawak is the lack of true dates on the
files. I contacted the publishers and was informed there had been a
problem before manufacturing the CD where most of the dates where
changed on the files. Due to this I could not readily evaluate if the
files where up to date without extracting them. In general, for the
majority of the files I did extract they were older versions but I did
not check too deep.
Some files never get outdated. They have included the EDM/2 (OS/2
programmer magazine?) archives and many icons. You can view these
without extracting to your hard drive. A definite
bonus in my opinion.
Of equal importance is the browsing software and the organization of
information on the CD. It should be simple to find and extract the
files you want. Arawak makes this chore a breeze under OS/2. A drag
and drop interface which creates a folder and places the extracted
files into that folder for you, what could be more simple. This is
truly how an OS/2 utility for CD viewing should behave.
The built in search function allows for case sensitive and global
searches of not just the filenames but descriptions as well. What is
extremely apparent in this interface is the lack of file dates. You
must use a different method to check file dates.
The files are organized in a friendly manner with descriptive topics
allowing you to quickly find what you are looking for. All the files
dealing with communications can be found under one main heading which
is further split to include BBS files.
I evaluated volume one, this is a new product with room to improve.
The manufacturers seem to be eager to please and willing to listen to
any and all suggestions for improvement of the product. They can be

release should be late August with a sales price in the $22 range.

[*]Vital OS/2 Tools and Utilities
There is a small tool that anyone would find valuable - WPSBkup.
This utility backs up your OS/2 WPS settings (desktop configuration)
, and stores them in a single file for recovery purposes. Best
of all, it has a PM shell. In it's latest 4.x version, WPSBkup can
keep track of multiple
backups, and it fully multi-threaded, meaning it can be run in
the background with no danger of reducing the integrity of the
backup. Restores are quite simple, and the program can be incorporated
onto the recovery disks make by Warp. An interesting side note -
when WPSBkup restores a desktop
configuration, it deletes ALL desktops it can find. In other words,
if you have had to install OS/2 over a previous version due to
a crash, and now have multiple desktop directories, this program
can get rid of them safely! WPSBkup is available on
[*]Hobbes .

We hear tell that there is a new CSD available for Warp Red Box,
which
will bring it up to the code level of Warp Fullpack. There is
no official announcement from IBM as far as we have seen, but one
should be coming soon. This CSD would be available from the normal
distribution sites.
